Overview of GRE
W.e.f - 1 Aug, 2011 ( Revised GRE )

The GRE® general test

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide graduate schools with a common measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants. A large number of Engineering as well as Management schools, use GRE scores to determine eligibility of a student for their programs and for merit-based grants and fellowships.

Preparing for the GRE can help you get into the grad or post grad school of your choice and can greatly increase your chances of getting financial aid. An increasingly number of B schools have started accepting GRE score for their management programs but please check with the university of your choice about the acceptance of GRE scores before starting your preparation.

Based on geographical conditions, the GRE General Test is offered in two formats
    a) Computer-based test
    b) Paper-based test

In most of the countries such as United states, Canada, India, Nepal etc, the GRE general test is computer based.

Paper-based GRE General Test administrations are offered in other areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available.

If you are unsure which test to choose, pls check the following link---  Test format for my location?

The GRE® subject test

In addition to the GRE general test, GRE subject test are also required by some universities for some specific courses. The university can ask you to write one of the subject test depending on the program you applied. If you want to stand out in the crowd of applicants by emphasizing your knowledge and skill level in a specific area then you can take a subject test and send the score across to  the university. One more thing, Subject Tests may not be required by schools, but they're a great way to distinguish yourself and show that you're serious about your studies and your future.

GRE Subject Test scores are accepted by thousands of graduate schools, including individual departments or divisions within these schools. Although the scores may not be a requirement for admission to a particular program, admissions committees are likely to consider the scores if they are submitted. It's best to contact the admissions office or department you're interested in and see exactly what they're looking for.

Subject Tests are intended for students with extensive background in one of these eight disciplines:

The Subject Tests are  paper-based tests and are administered three times a year worldwide, in

  • October
  • November
  • April

Test Structure

The GRE General computer based test measures skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not necessarily related to any particular field of study.

The New GRE is Sectional adaptive test.

  • The New GRE test is adaptive by section. i.e performance on the first section determines the difficulty level of the second section. So, the performance on the first section determines the difficulty and scoring of the second section.
  • Within a section, you can skip, navigate, mark and change your responses. Once you submit a section, you cannot return to it !
  • You can leave a question un- answered, which was not possible in the previous format.

The test is composed of three sections namely

Verbal Reasoning (VR)

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

In sum, don’t be deluded that the role of vocabulary has been marginalized, it’s just that the stress is on usage of vocabulary in real life rather than on vocabulary usage in isolation. In reading comprehension a shift towards critical reasoning is observed, so again more stress on the analytical abilities of the test taker.
