Extremely important Words for CAT RC

Dear CAT aspirant,

Have you ever been exasperated at not being able to understand the RC passage? Are you flummoxed when unable to answer the questions asked? Are you less than confident? Do you need to refer to the dictionary when you come across some difficult words like Retribution, Comeuppance, Excoriate, Kowtow? Don't you think opening dictionary and scouring for words ruin the pleasure of reading ?

At MJA, thousands of CAT students are purging themselves of these impediments. A weak vocabulary stymies the reading speed, on the other hand a strong vocabulary gives an impetus to comprehension, listening and writing and speaking . If you cannot speed read and comprehend ; which is sacrosanct for CAT exam, you will appear incompetent. Recognition, Financial rewards, chances of going in prestigious Management colleges could pass you by!

Friends, it is an ancient belief that good comprehension is not possible with weak vocabulary and poor reading habit. There are certain key words, phrasal verbs (e.g. Plumb new depths).
CAT RC Words

(Plumb new depths means to be in or to experience an extreme example of sth unpleasant).

which decide the tone of the author. Unfortunately many students cannot answer these cardinal questions:

What is the tone of author in the passage?
What will be the suitable title for this passage?
But Why are we unable to answer the questions. One of the reasons is poor vocabulary.
We miss key words like: Propensity, Indictment, sardonically, Ineffable.
Nobody would contradict that vocabulary is an inevitable part of your CAT preparations.

Initially some CAT aspirants may discount this belief but later the same students notice that most management leaders have pretty strong vocabularies.

In CAT vocabulary does not play a paramount role?
This is what you may think...
However, if this is your belief you need to shift your paradigm.

Entire world has witnessed the ignominious defeat of India and Pakistan. This is the fallout of such erroneous beliefs and approach -

I would like to ask you a question. Why our nations stock up lethal arsenals when We hardly use these against our enemies !

Friends, may be these lethal weapons are not used frequently but it instills confidence and a sense of security. We can successfully retaliate if our neighboring countries foray into our territory. These arsenals are but mere deterrents. Think what would happen if we are searching and designing missiles after the enemy has launched its offensive, surely we will loose the war.

The same way, a powerful vocabulary instills confidence and a sense of security. If someone is using difficult words in Group Discussion or in passage, you can counter those verbal bullies with your strong vocabulary. Not only that, you can hold your own in any group and communicate more elegantly and powerfully. On the other hand, if you are scouring for words and improving your language when enemy (Examinations) is lunging towards you, surely you will loose your CAT, XAT, FMS battle. Ask yourself can you afford to lose ?.

  Read this passage

The Tale of Genji is very old and very new, a novel about love and society that also, along with Proust's masterpiece, is one of the world's great representations of the passage of human time. It immerses us deeply in a strange and distant culture, whose graceful decadence initially seems light years away from the haste and thirst for progress of modern Japan. But 21st century Japan shares the same sense of fecund decay as Genji's Heian period - in both eras, society has become complex, gaudy but, finally, ennui-inducing. Now, as then, it is more rewarding to scurtnize the smallest signs of every human interaction rather than engage in the tawdry world outside the concubine's boudoir - or love hotel's rumpus room.

The words like
decadence, fecund, ennui, tawdry, concubine, boudoir, rumpus severely hampers you reading speed; do they not?

Read the meanings of the words used in above passage...

Decadence - behaviour, attitudes, etc. which show a fall in standards.

Fecund - producing new and useful things, especially ideas

Ennui - feeling of boredom

Tawdry - immoral

Concubine - a woman who lives with a man, often in addition to his wife or wives, but who is less important than they are.

When you know the precise meanings there is a substantial difference in speed and comprehension. You must have a strong vocabulary... this is an ineluctable part for improving RC.
